The Longing In Me

Week Three - The Longing for Control
Reminder: Watch this video the week of Jun 30 - Jul 6

What is it that makes you feel like your life is out of control? Is it another individual in your life, a set of circumstances you're currently dealing with, or just a sense of lost direction? Regardless, if you are dealing with the longing for control, that struggle is real. We all desire to feel our lives are ordered, well-planned (and executed); that things are going well and that we are making our own decisions. But when we take over the controls of our lives, more times than not we find them spinning helplessly OUT of control! In this week's session, Sheila will share and show that only when we relinquish control to God in Heaven can we hope to find order from the chaos and experience purpose in the challenges of daily living.

Scripture of the Week

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
~ Philippians 4:6-7 (NASB)

Discussion / Journaling Question

We sincerely believe this six-week online study will encourage you as you learn to direct your God-endowed longings to the one who longs for you. Let us encourage you, after watching each weeks' video teaching segment (and reading the corollary readings in the book and study guide if you've purchased those); to review the discussion/journaling questions we provide below. If you're doing this study "solo", let these prompt you in your prayer time, as you journal, or simply to ponder during your study time. If you are in a group setting for this study (face-to-face with others, or via social media or online tools); you may wish to discuss these with others in your "group".

Questions to ponder, journal, or discuss with others enjoying this study with you:

  1. David's lie to the priest resulted in horrific consequences he did not forsee. Have you ever had unforseen consequences befall others as a result of your trying to take control and "fix" something yourself like David did?
  2. Why do we find it so difficult to place our trust in the Lord, when at our deepest soul level, we know He is more trustworthy than even ourselves?
  3. What is the hardest thing you've ever had to leave with the Lord, trusting Him to take control and relinquishing that control yourself?
